Civilian Jobs In Iraq

Civilian jobs in Iraq are plentiful and most pay very well, especially the jobs with American companies.

***It is important for you to understand that we cannot hire you or actually get you a job in Iraq or Afghanistan. We are providing a list of job opportunities and companies who want your services but you have to apply with them and not us. We are not affiliated with them. Please follow the directions on these pages and apply to each individual company. Good luck!***

Some of the foreign companies do not pay well at all or on time.

Generally what they like to do is get you to agree to some sort of base plus commission. Then they figure out how to squeeze that commission from you.

When I was working at the Al Asad Hardware Store, my salary was based on commission. The only way to make the commission was to have sales and to have sales required merchandise to sell.

The company was bleeding off all the store profits to open up a cement plant at Taji in order to make T-Walls and other things. Unfortunately, the company did not have the know how to do this project and ran into enormous cost overruns to the point that they could not stock the store. So my salary was not anywhere near the amount the company told me it would be.

Also, they do not do direct deposit like American companies do.

They would wire transfer the money to my bank account which cost me $20 to send and then another $10 for my bank account to receive it every month. The wire transfer from the Middle East takes two or three days to hit the bank in the United States.

Foreign companies send the money to a different bank in New York City and if it is the weekend, forget it. If it is sent on the weekend, it will not hit my bank until Tuesday afternoon. In the Middle East, the weekend is Thursday and Friday. In the United States, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Monday is a sort of bank posting catch-up day.

So you have to be careful in choosing civilian jobs in Iraq. Go with a reputable American company if at all possible.

One of the best companies to go with for civilian jobs in Iraq is Halliburton also known as KBR.

American companies make sure that you are housed and fed and they pay for it. They use direct deposit and you are never charged for this. The check hits your bank on time so your bills are not late and your wife back home is not hit with a deluge of phone calls from all of the creditors wanting to know when they will receive payment.

American companies usually do what they say they will do in their contracts. No surprises, just the facts.

If you are ex-military, you stand a better chance of getting the higher paying jobs. There are some good places to look for these jobs on the internet, such as Military Hire.

There are so many types of civilian jobs in Iraq now with security companies, to food service, to laundering, to warehousing, to truck driving, and the list goes on. There is always a high need for generator and wheel vehicle mechanics.

Below, materials to set up our base camp. It looks like a mess but we really do know what we are doing.

Family Sites

My husband, David, wrote this page:

The following are my family sites built by members of my household using a company called SBI or Site Build It!

The first is Chair Massage Is For You which talks about chair and body massage. My wife goes into a lot of depth on the various muscles, how to become a massage therapist, career options in the field of massage therapy and so on.

The second one is Create A Christian Wedding. Here my wife talks about everything a person needs to know to have a beautiful Christian wedding. Lots of do it yourself info on how to cater your own wedding reception, make favors, centerpieces, and flower arrangements as well.

The third one is Family Fun In And Around San Antonio where my wife talks about all the things to do in San Antonio, including visiting The Alamo and The River Walk.

The next one is Fun In And Around Colorado Springs. We lived in Colorado Springs for four years and it is a beautiful place to visit. There are many great sites to see including Pikes Peak.

If you love to read, Best Book Reviews For Teens And Young Adults is the site for you. My 16 year old daughter Tiffany gives a brief summary on the many books she is reading.

If you love guitar music, visit Guitar Beginner Center which is a site where my 17 year old son, Matthew, teaches his visitors how to play the guitar.

My site on vegetable gardening tips from preparing soil to harvesting fabulous veggies is at Vegetable Gardening Made Easier.

In another life, I was a pastor. If you are a pastor who was hurt in the ministry, Help For Hurting Pastors may help you to heal.

I hope you find these sites useful.

About The Author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

This page is about the author, David Neal Schulze.

David at his store at Al Asad, Airbase, Iraq

I left the big city of San Antonio when I was ten and moved to Leakey, Texas. There my step-mom owned 335 acres of land in the Hill Country. We had one of the 1100 springs. It was said that Leakey was in the heart of 1100 springs—these springs feed the Rio Frio River.
We built a new house, put in a huge garden and raised a few cattle, along with chickens and rabbits. I played football. For three years I was a lineman. This was because I had a yellow-streak. I did not mind tackling the guy with the ball, but I did not want to be the guy with the ball.

About the author and his football experience:

In my senior year our team was short on running backs so I became one. I loved it. The harder people hit me the tougher I felt I was.

I scored three touchdowns that year. We won the last eight-man football game ever played in Texas in 1975. They still have a sign up in my home town proclaiming this.

1975 State Champions, 8 Man Football

About the Author and his military experience:

I graduated and spent eight years in the Army. I enjoyed my years in the Army. I started out as a wheel mechanic. I was a very good wheel mechanic, but I could not make Staff Sergeant unless I moved to another field.

I became a tank commander. There is nothing like the power of having an M60A1 or A3 tank, loaded with machine guns with thousands of rounds of ammo, and sixty-three main battle rounds, at my command. I loved being a tanker.

About a year before I got out of the military, I met my current wife of 21 years. We have had many good years together. Does that mean they were without problems? No! I classify a good year as one in which I was able to get out of bed each day.

David at Kabul, Afghanistan

About the Author and his children:

We have three children whom we love very much. One is twenty-one and is getting married in May 2009. He has two more years of college left. Another is eighteen and is a very talented musician. I have posted some of his music on You Tube.

My youngest is sixteen and she can play the guitar and flute. She is also very good at writing music and drama. I have posted some of her music on You Tube as well. All three have part-time jobs. The music is posted under their names of Matthew and Tiffany Schulze.

David Graduating from Bible College

After getting out of the Army, I went to Bible College to study to be a pastor. After four years of pastoring and four moves, I decided to leave the pastorate and settle down for the sake of the children while they were in school. I did not want them moving constantly having to make new friends all the time.

I made some stupid mistakes that ruined my family financially. It has taken me almost six years to get our finances back on track and even now I am not where I want to be. I spent many years overseas working in order to fix the damage.

Some of the jobs I had overseas left me all alone at night. In Kuwait, nights and weekends were very lonely. I had no car so once the company driver dropped me off I was on my own. I would spend weekends cooped up in my apartment with no one to talk to.

I did spend some time writing a novel about a second invasion of South Korea by North Korea. I think it would have been a good book; however, my morale convictions would not let me finish it.

More about the Author:
I have a gift for writing. I wanted to use this gift to do some good in this world. I have seen many places and experienced a lot of sensations that I would like to pass on to others.

I could publish a book that might help people. But it is costly and time consuming. And, getting a book published depended upon the opinions of others. This did not fit my plans.

I worked a lot of different jobs. I wanted to settle down and stick with one thing. In the movie “City Slickers”, curly would tell the guys that there is only one thing that matters.” It is up to us to find that one thing and then stick to it. I wanted to write, pass on my experiences and help people in their daily lives. But how would I do this?

Then I happened upon a site that talked about Site Build It. With Site Build It you can turn you passion, skill, experiences, knowledge or hobby into an online business. Almost any topic can be used to make money with a website.

Me build a website? Sounds difficult? Actually it is not. Site Build it has designed a system with all the tools and training you need to set up your website. These tools and training require no programming or web design skills.

Site Build It will help you find a topic, build it, get traffic to it and teach you how to make money with it.

Interested in SBI. Then take a look at the video tour--

Want more information about Site Build It? Go to the Site Build It page.

With SBI I set up this site on Iraq.

I was so impressed with SBI that I set up another site. Each site has its own about the author page:

www.help-for-hurting-pastors.com which is about my ministry experience. With this site I offer encouragement to pastors going through hard times in the church.

And I wanted to do one more site. This is www.vegetable-gardening-made-easier.com which is a site about vegetable gardening in the back yard. Any space can be used to grow some vegetables. I will be photographing the plants as they grow. This should be an exciting experience.

I am hoping my writing will do “some good”. I guess I do not need to hope it is doing “some good”. From the emails I have been getting, I can see that my sites are helping others.

SBI is helping me accomplish my goal of doing “some good.”
